Liverpool won the 1983-84 UEFA Champions League, then known as the European Cup.
This was the English side’s fourth title, and all within a space of eight years, having previously won in back-to-back seasons between 1977 and 1978, as well as in 1981.
Liverpool beat AS Roma on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra-time at the Italian side’s home Stadio Olimpico in Rome. This was the first occasion in which the tournament had been decided in a penalty shootout. The only previous final to end in a draw after extra-time went to a replay, in 1974.
