Real Madrid were the first team to win the UEFA Champions League when the competition started during the 1955-56 season.
However, the tournament was known as the European Cup back then. The Spanish side beat French champions Stade de Reims 4-3 in the 1956 final at the Parc des Princes in Paris, France.
The European Cup was rebranded into the Champions League for the 1992-93 season with Olympique Marseille winning the first tournament under its new name and format. The controversial French champions beat AC Milan 1-0 in the final at the Olympiastadion in Munich, Germany.
This is the only occasion that a French side has won Europe’s premier club trophy.
