Diego Maradona was the first football player to transfer between clubs for £2 million or more.
The Argentine superstar moved from Boca Juniors to Barcelona in 1982 for €3 million. The previous world record transfer fee at the time had been Paolo Rossi, who moved from Vicenza to Juventus for €1.75 million six years earlier.
Diego Maradona would become the first player to break the world record transfer fee on more than one occasion when he left Barcelona for Napoli for €5 million in 1984 – breaking his own record.
