Who was the first £2 million British football player?

Mark Hughes was the first British football player to transfer between clubs for £2 million or more.

The Welsh striker moved from Manchester United to Barcelona for a fee of £2.3 million in May 1986. The previous record transfer fee involving a British football player was £1.5 million, when Ray Wilkins moved from Manchester United to AC Milan two years earlier.
