Mexico hosted the 1970 FIFA World Cup between 31 May-21 June.
This was the first time the competition had been hosted outside of South America or Europe. Mexico would later host the World Cup again in 1986.
The 1970 World Cup was the ninth edition of the tournament and was won by Brazil. They were 4-1 winners over Italy in front of 100,000 spectators at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
Brazil’s triumph was their third in four tournaments, having also won the 1958 and 1962 editions. In the process, the South American nation became the first country to win the competition for the third time.
