How many times have English clubs won the Champions League?

A total of five different English clubs have won the UEFA Champions League on 13 occasions.

Only Spanish clubs (18) have won the competition on more occasions.

Manchester United were the first English side to win the competition, back in 1968. They went on to become champions of Europe again in 1999 and 2008.

Liverpool have been the country’s most successful club in the competition, winning on six occasions; 1977, 1978, 1981, 1984, 2005 and 2019.

Nottingham Forest won the Champions League, then known as the European Cup, in back-to-back years of 1979 and 1980.

Aston Villa won the 1982 tournament, which was the last of six consecutive seasons that the Champions League had been one by English clubs.

Chelsea lifted the trophy in 2012 when they beat Bayern Munich on penalties in the German cub’s back yard.
