Towards the end of the season Irish midfielder Sean Thornton made his Premier League debut in a 2-1 loss away to Everton in January. This would be the start of 15 consecutive defeats for the Black Cats. Thornton played in 11 of these – a record for most appearances in a Premier League career, losing every single one.
